UK weather

The UK’s weather can be pretty changeable. The Gulf Stream stops things from getting extreme in either summer or winter, so temperatures rarely drop too low or rise too high. Summers are short but pleasant, especially in the south where temperatures in August can peak at around 30 degrees. Further north and in Scotland, expect temperatures to be a few degrees cooler throughout the year. Winters can be on the chilly side, although rarely freezing. With so much to see in this country there is no best time to go, but if you do decide to pay a visit bring a brolly just in case.

UK festivals and events

June -July: Classical music focused, but with jazz, world music and opera thrown in for good measure, the City of London Festival brings you a host of spectacular concerts in some great venues. If you’re lucky you might even get to see one in the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral.

August: The Edinburgh Festival is the world’s largest cultural event and draws in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Expect a range of comedy, dancing, singing and theatrical performances in every corner of the city.

August: The Notting Hill Carnival is London’s biggest party and is a feast of parades, dancing, and flashy costumes. Expect every kind of music under the sun, plenty of food from all over the world and a crowd that is up for a party.

December: The largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany, Birmingham’s confusingly named ‘Frankfurt Christmas Market’ is quite something. It’s an explosion of all sorts of food, drink, and Christmas specialities of all kinds. Perfect for getting into that seasonal spirit.

Tips

. . .
1/3

If you’re in London make sure you visit Borough Market, one of the largest in Europe. Dating back to the 13th century, the market is known for its top quality and often unusual fare. Watch your pockets though as it can get pricey.

2/3

For some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK, head north west to the Lake District. Think rolling hills, lakeside views and plenty of stately homes. The restaurants here are some of the best in the country too.

3/3

For a really traditional stay in the UK, try to book yourself into one of the hundreds of ancient castles across the country that offer accommodation. How’s that for a once in a lifetime retreat?
