Make sure you sample some of the local cuisine while you are in Turkey. You’ll find that a lot of places serve meze; small dishes of food, which can be anything from rice-stuffed vine leaves to meatballs or cheese. Dig in.

Turkey was one of the birthplaces of Christianity and is still home to many of Europe’s earliest churches, with Istanbul having the largest number. Check out the old Chora Church by the city’s land walls for some amazing Byzantine mosaics.

Do as the locals do and have some of the national drink while you’re in Turkey. Careful though, while Raki may look like water it doesn’t taste like it. At 45 percent alcohol it could have you on the floor quicker than you think.
