How would a travel guide describe Tenerife? Volcanic lunar landscapes, lush pine forests, fertile valleys, beautiful beaches, traditional Spanish towns and bustling resorts - yes they're all here.

The largest of Spain's Canary Islands is an old favourite when it comes to tourism, having seen visitors travelling to its shores for over 100 years. So Tenerife has an infrastructure that caters for every tourist, from young revellers to families of four. And what's more, because it is located a mere 100 kilometres off the coast of northern Africa it has great temperatures all year long. The average is a balmy 23 degrees - no wonder it is called the 'island of eternal spring'.

Siam Park

...enough to keep the kids quiet for weeks.

In busy resorts like Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas in the south, you'll find activities for everyone. Think bar, after bar, nightclubs for those of you who think sleeping is for wimps, watersports in abundance, and enough to keep the kids quiet for weeks. Oh, and there's every possible cuisine too, from paella to steak pie and chips. But if it's peace and quiet you're after, Tenerife has that as well. The further north you go the fewer tourists you'll see and the better the scenery becomes.

Mount Teide

...Volcanic lunar landscapes

A rugged coast and black volcanic beaches lie comfortably next to an abundance of green banana plantations. Here you'll also come across quaint little towns like Garachico where you can sample some amazing Canarian cuisine. And if that doesn't tempt you, the north of the island also has a host of activities too, from hiking and rock-climbing to horse-riding, and even whale-watching. Of course, if that all sounds like too much hard work then you can always pop on some shades, grab a book and head to the beach - it's up to you.

Tips

. . .
1/3

Don't miss Tenerife's carnival, the world's second biggest after Rio's. The 14-day festival takes place in February and features huge open-air parties and streets full of general merrymaking.

2/3

If you've got time take the ferry to the smaller islands of La Gomera or La Palma and see a more peaceful and laidback side to the Canary Islands.

3/3

If you love beach parties then don't miss the midsummer party of San Juan on the night of 23 June. Bonfires are lit all over the island and everyone heads down to the beaches for one big party.
