If it's a true slice of Spain you're after, then any travel guide will tell you to look no further than the city of Murcia.

That's because both the city, and its region have somehow managed to remain untouched by large-scale tourism and have a character that is as Spanish as bull fighting. Sounds good? Well add to this some 250 kilometres of beautiful and unspoilt coastline, a year round average temperature of 17 degrees and more than 3,000 hours of sun a year and you have a perfect holiday destination. So what's the catch? Well there isn't one, unless of course you don't like the idea of travelling to a region full of mountains, rivers, orchards, traditional towns and stunning desert. And there isn't a better place to base yourself than in Murcia City, or the 'Baroque capital of Spain' as it is commonly called.

Murcia travel guide

......the 'Baroque capital of Spain'

Think amazing architecture, pedestrianised areas full of great shops, beautiful squares, medieval cathedrals, and park, after park and you get the picture. Just make sure your gym membership is up to date before you embark on a trip to Murcia as you might just pack on a few kilos - to say the food here is good is an understatement. But that's not all. As well as a hearty gastronomy, the city also offers tourists a wealth of friendly and traditional bars, cafes, and clubs. Murcia certainly has enough activities to satisfy every taste.

Tips

. . .
1/3

For 2 back-to-back festivals, come the week after Easter. Bando de la Huerta sees the locals dressed as peasants and drinking like them too. While the 'Burial of the Sardine,' is a Rio-style carnival featuring an enormous sardine.

2/3

For all things watersports check out Mar Menor, or Europe's largest salt water lake on the south east coast of Murcia: often described as the world's largest swimming pool.

3/3

Witness some of Spain's best flamenco up close and personal at the world famous Cante de las Minas festival in the town of La Union. The ten-day event in August features some of the best flamenco artists in Spain.
