With an almost endless supply of sightseeing and tourist attractions in Barcelona, you'll find it difficult to know what to see first. To make life a little easier we've listed some of the best things to see and places to go. So make sure you've got your walking shoes ready, partying hat on and overdraft extended – just in case.

Things to see and do in Barcelona

Sagrada Família

Sagrada Família

Ok, so it might still be unfinished after 127 years of construction, but it's still impressive. Love it or loathe it, Gaudi's iconic cathedral is one of the most recognisable of Barcelona's sights and one of the most famous buildings in the world. Carrer de Mallorca; Metro – Sagrada Familia.

Barcelona Zoo

Barcelona Zoo

For the younger at heart and for those who just don't want to grow up, the zoo is a great Barcelona attraction. It offers an array of animals, a picnic area, mini-train and electric cars, and is conveniently located in Parc Ciutadella. Metro – Ciutadella.

Museums

Picasso and Miró museums

See these world famous artists' dedicated museums and check out some of their best known paintings, sculptures and tapestries; many of which date as far back as the turn of the twentieth century. Picasso Museum: Montcada 15-23; Metro – Jaume 1 (free entrance every first Sunday of the month). Miró Museum: Parc de Montjuic; Metro – Espanya.

Parc Guell

Parc Guell

Another Gaudi classic with great views of the city. The park contains some crazy structures and outlandish, nature-inspired mosaics by the Catalan architect. Metro – Lesseps

Mercat de la Boqueria

Mercat de la Boqueria

Get your head around the 250 stalls and 20,000 different products that make up Barcelona's biggest and oldest market and literally shop till you drop. You can find good, cheap local produce here. Plaça de la Boqueria; Metro – Liceu

Barri Gotic and Las Ramblas

Barri Gòtic and Las Ramblas

Night owls can find some of the best bars and clubs in these two vibrant and atmospheric areas. Watch the measures though, they don't hold back in this city.

Sitges

Sitges

For better beaches outside Barcelona, head down the coast to the town of Sitges. El Garraf has good facilities, isn't usually overcrowded and the journey only takes 30 minutes.

Festes de la Merce is the city's main festival and takes place around the week of the 24th September. Events of all types take place, but one to look out for is the human tower competition.
