Asturias’ attractions won’t leave you wanting for things to see and things to do. Sights include everything from cathedrals to coastlines, monasteries to mountains. Head to the cities to see some spectacular architecture and soak up the regional flavour. And if the great outdoors is more your thing then head to the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Things to see and do in Asturias

Cova Donga

Covadonga

A spectacular cathedral, the Sanctuary of Covadonga, is what stands out most in this village at the foot of the Picos de Europa mountain range. Built to mark the place where Asturias turned back an 8th century Muslim invasion, it is quite simply breathtaking.

Cabopenas

Cabo Peñas

Asturias’ northernmost point, this enormous rocky promontory protrudes out into the Cantabrian Sea. With the waves crashing into the cliffs far below, it’s one of the more impressive of Asturias’ sights, not to mention a great day out for the family. Diving is not recommended!

IdolodepentatuIdolodepentatu

Ídolo de Peña Tú

An enormous piece of ancient art, this bronze age sculpture is one of a kind. It’s a short trek through woodland from the town of Riego, a unique piece of Asturias sightseeing, and it’s well worth the adventure!

Outdoor Activities

Outdoor activities

Canoeing, fishing, horse riding, canyoning, mountaineering, hunting, skiing: you name it, if it’s some kind of outdoor pursuit then Asturias has both the terrain and the facilities for it. It gets pretty busy during the summer months, so be sure to book your outdoor activities well in advance of your holiday.

Night Life

Nightlife in the cities

While it’s not Ibiza, the big cities in Asturias definitely have a vibrant nightlife. Visit Gijon, Mieres or Oviedo for some great bars and clubs and a warm, friendly party culture. In Oviedo, most of the old town is pedestrianised, making for some high-spirited street parties, particularly during summer festival season.

Shopping

Shopping

Don’t miss out on the unique local arts and crafts shops you’ll find scattered throughout the cities and towns, with some of the best to be found in Cangas de Onis. Take home some gifts for your friends, and why not a few for yourself too.

Tips

. . .
1/3

People have lived in the Asturias region for nearly 2.5 million years. It’s seen everything from Stone Age civilisations to Visigoths, Romans and Moors, and it was a centre of the Spanish Enlightenment. You’ll find everything from cave paintings to museums bursting with regional artefacts. Don’t miss out!

2/3

Forget tapas and sangria, Asturias has a cuisine all of its own. How about ‘fabada’, a thick traditional stew with chorizo, pork shoulder, white beans and saffron; or ‘caldereta’, a hearty fish stew? There’s a plethora of great local delicacies, so get stuck in. It’s the perfect end to a long day’s exploring.

3/3

Drive out to the coast and stop into any one of the many picturesque fishing villages you’ll find huddled by the sea, such as Cudillero. You’ll find them friendly and relaxed, and best of all, you can sample some of Spain’s best fish dishes.
