With millions of visitors every year, Alicante has become one of Spain's tourism hotspots - well its nickname is the 'City of the Sun' after all.

Yes that's right, look inside any Alicante travel guide and you'll see that it only rains here for around 20 days a year. That's because the city is wedged between mountains and the Mediterranean creating a unique microclimate, meaning the weather here is great all year round. Alicante is also located along the world-renowned Costa Blanca, so its miles and miles of pristine white beaches aren't half bad either - just don't forget the factor 30. But that's not all the city has to offer tourists. Think party central in the summer months, and romantic cultural city break in the winter. And if you're thinking about travelling to Alicante for a family holiday it's the perfect place. This town, come resort has numerous top class hotels, great restaurants and enough activities to keep the little ones quiet for days.

Las Hogueras de San Juan

...Alicante has become one of Spain's tourism hotspots.

Unlike many other places on the Costa Blanca, Alicante has retained a laid-back vibe - well with only 20 days of rain a year that's hardly surprising. It also has a distinctly Spanish feel, from its traditional annual festivals to the winding streets of its historic quarter and its beautiful café and palm-lined promenades. Let's just say this is a city where the locals still eat paella rather than English breakfasts, and love a good old-fashioned fiesta.

El Barrio

...Alicante has retained a laid-back vibe

What's more Alicante is pretty compact. You can spend the morning shopping around Avenida de Frederico, grab some tapas in the Plaza de Montaceta for lunch, pop to the beach in the afternoon, and spend the evening in the bars and clubs of the medieval El Barrio area. All of this without the need to see a chiropodist after.

Tips

. . .
1/3

For Spain's best festival commemorating the Christian conquest over the Moors head to the town of Alcoy, north of Alicante. Late April sees it transformed into a huge battleground, where 28 armies do battle over 4 days.

2/3

Whilst Alicante is a very safe city, just watch your bags in the crowded areas at night. There are some pickpockets here who would make the Artful Dodger blush.

3/3

If you like your beaches with a few less bodies, grab the tram eight kilometres up the coast to San Juan Beach with its host of amenities and water sports galore.
