‘Pearl of the Atlantic,’ or the ‘floating garden,’ Madeira travel guides have many ways of describing this Portuguese paradise island in the middle of the Atlantic. And it’s hardly surprising given Madeira’s towering mountains, lush rainforests, terraced hillside plantations and meandering river valleys. But the island’s appeal isn’t just in its jaw-dropping natural beauty. Believe it or not Madeira has been a tourism hotspot for over one hundred years, and so has a long history of catering for a range of tourists.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

...jaw-dropping natural beauty.

Whether you’re looking to relax by the pool, do a bit of walking in the hills, or shop for that designer outfit you’ve always wanted, the chances are you’ll be able to do it here. And the best thing about this place is that you can enjoy it at any time of the year. Yes that’s right, Madeira’s winters are only 4 degrees lower than their summers, meaning you no longer have to be that pasty white colour all winter long.

Expect to find a good old dollop of Portuguese charm when you visit this island; well it is still technically part of Portugal after all. And nowhere is this charm more apparent than in the colonial-style capital, Funchal. Think whitewashed buildings, imposing churches, pavement cafes and top-class restaurants all set amongst a backdrop of mountains to one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other – convinced yet? And while the nightlife in Madeira isn’t exactly going to make Ibiza shake in its boots, you will find a good range of salsa bars, casinos and sophisticated nightclubs to keep you happy – and not a kebab shop or karaoke bar in sight

Funchal Cathedral

...panoramic views like you’ve never seen before.

It’s also in Funchal that you’ll find some of the island’s top hotels for which it has become famous. If you like your 5-star service with ocean and mountain views, botanical gardens, infinity pools and a host of spa treatments thrown in for good measure, then you’ve come to the right place. But even those looking for something a little more low-key will find it in Madeira. If you want to take advantage of the island’s mountainous beauty you can always lock yourself away in one of Madeira’s many village guesthouses and soak up panoramic views like you’ve never seen before. And for the more active there are resorts like Canico de Baixo where you can perfect your waterskiing skills, or even lose yourself in a spot of golf at the 27-hole Santo da Serra course. Just remember to leave the golfing jumpers at home.

Tips

. . .
1/3

If you like your fireworks then come and celebrate New Year’s Eve in Madeira, and enjoy one of the world’s biggest annual fireworks display in Funchal.

2/3

Any trip to Madeira is not complete without trying the local dish known as ‘espetada.’  Consisting of skewers of garlic-covered meat, onions and peppers, the ‘espetadas’ are left to grill over smouldering wood chips – yum yum!

3/3

Madeira is known for its mountainous beauty and not for its golden beaches. Having said that you will find nice sand beaches at Calheta where the water is both crystal clear and warm.
