Things to see and do in France

eiffel tower

Eiffel Tower

It goes without saying, but we’re going to say it anyway. Drawing millions each year, the Eiffel Tower is the jewel in Paris’ crown. You’ll find it hard to escape, as it pops into view at the end of streets when you’re least expecting it! See it from afar, or take the lift to the top. The view is quite simply staggering.

nice oldtown

Old Town

Nice’s old town, or Vieux Nice, is a charming warren of old fashioned streets, stairwells and alleyways huddled beneath the hill. Here you’ll get a taste of Nice as it was in the past, with beautiful houses and captivating little boutiques. There are also daily fruit and flower markets, which complete the atmosphere.

the louvre

The Louvre

Another staple among Paris attractions is the world famous Louvre, renowned worldwide as one of the finest museums of art and culture in existence. Inside you’ll find the equally famous Mona Lisa. Bear in mind that The Louvre is vast, and if you want to see it all, you should plan at least an entire day.

vineyards

Tour the vineyards of Bordeaux

The first thing you think when you hear Bordeaux is wine, and there’s certainly a lot of it here! The second-largest wine-growing region in the world is full of vineyards, many of which offer tours to visitors. Some of the best known are Château Haut Brion and Château Lafite Rothschild. Make sure you book in advance.

beach

Beaches

The beaches in Corsica are some of the best in the world, and offer some great opportunities for swimming and sunbathing in comfort. No matter which beach you choose to go to, you’ll find plenty of snorkelling opportunities, while the busier beaches will offer windsurfing and even kite surfing.

lyon

Old Lyon

This is the largest Renaissance area in Europe after Venice, and is a trip back in time to the Middle Ages. Old fashioned narrow lanes run by the riverside, and its charming cobbled streets are home to craftsmen’s shops, cute boutiques and all manner of curiosities.

Tips

. . .
1/3

One of the most economical ways to stay in France is to rent a gite, or a holiday cottage. They are mostly located in the countryside, are self-catering, but provide substantially lower nightly rates than hotels.

2/3

August is when many of the French take their holidays. If you decide to travel to some of the less touristy areas, you should be aware of this. Many of the local shops and businesses will be closed during this month.

3/3

Learning a little French before you travel goes a long way. While in many of the more touristy areas English and other languages are widely spoken, your friendly hosts will appreciate it if you know a few of the basics.
