Mouthwatering French cuisine, a compact yet stunning old quarter and a surrounding countryside that is quite simply the best in France, Toulouse has all the ingredients for the perfect holiday.

Toulouse is definitely one of France’s hidden gems when it comes to city breaks or that longer summer getaway.

Normally overlooked by tourists for cities and resorts closer to the sea, Toulouse is definitely one of France’s hidden gems when it comes to city breaks or that longer summer getaway. The main appeal of this southern metropolis just a stone’s throw from the Pyrenees has to be its spectacular architecture. This is France’s pink city, or la ville rose if you’re in the know, thanks to the red brick used in the construction of many of its buildings. A stunning old town that changes colour depending on the light, walks along the Garonne River and parks and cafe-lined squares complete the lineup of attractions that keep tourists coming back to France’s fourth-largest city year after year. Oh, and being so close to Spain, the weather isn’t bad either, plus you can expect an almost Latin-style vibe to this city. What do we mean? Well, let’s just say things go at a rather slower pace than the rest of the country.

Old Quarter

That’s not to say that the city doesn’t have a buzz to it. Toulouse is home to France’s second-largest student population after all, meaning that no matter what type of nightlife you’re after, you’ll find it here. And this being France, you certainly won’t be complaining about the food either – think foie gras, slow-cooked cassoulet and plenty of hearty meat dishes; and that’s just the mains, wait until you see the desserts! As most proud residents will tell you, Toulouse is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in France. The Lauragais to the south is often described as Little Tuscany thanks to its rolling hills and green valleys. And you’ll find a whole host of picturesque towns and villages dotting the landscape just waiting to be explored. Towns like the medieval wonder that is Carcassonne, a fortified village that looks just as it did 700 years ago. Then there’s ancient Albi, which is famous for being the birthplace of Toulouse-Lautrec and Moissac, with its ancient abbey and art galleries; the list goes on and on. And what is the best way to see this beautiful part of the world? By boat of course, along the Canal du Midi network that stretches throughout the region. Good food, great weather and countryside that will blow you away – Toulouse should be at the top of everyone’s ‘to do’ list.

Tips

For shopping, head down to the Rue de Rome if you’re after the latest fashions. For food, check out the covered market at Place Victor Hugo, where you’ll find everything from ripe cheese to fresh fish.

2/3

Visit the Niaux Cave to the south west of Toulouse to see some of the oldest cave paintings in the world. The prehistoric artwork here dates back to an incredible 11,000 BC.

In the winter, why not combine a city break with a skiing holiday? Pyrenees resorts such as Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig are a mere two hours from Toulouse airport.
