So you want to holiday with the jet set, sip coffees in superyacht filled marinas and party the night away in an elegant beach bar? Then there can only be one word – Nice!

If you’re after a bit of glitz and glamour then the seaside city-cum-resort of Nice in the south of France should do the trick. Pulling in the crowds for centuries with a dizzying array of sun, sea and style, Nice is the capital of the Côte d’Azure, one of the most glamorous holiday destinations in the whole of Europe. Walk the red carpet in Cannes, drool over the superyachts in Antibes or join the celeb set in St Tropez, whatever you choose to do, holidays to Nice and the Côte d’Azure are action packed with elegance.

Musee D'art moderne

Pulling in the crowds for centuries with a dizzying array of sun, sea and style.

It was the Victorians that first discovered the many charms of Nice; the Promenade des Anglais, a beach that goes on forever, impossibly turquoise waters and a beautifully preserved old town. And they’re all still here, along with plenty of striking Art Deco architecture, Russian Orthodox cathedrals and more seaside cafes than you can shake a coffee bean at – if you want to sit and watch the beautiful world pass you by then there is no better place to do it than Nice. And as you’d expect from France’s fifth largest city, you’ll find fabulous restaurants in abundance. From Michelin-starred haunts of the rich and famous to your local corner bistro, one thing is for certain you’ll find it difficult to get a bad meal in this city.

Nice old town

Holidays to Nice and the Côte d’Azure are action packed with elegance.

And when you’ve finished stuffing your face with gourmet food, you’ll probably be checking out the city’s Roman ruins, its archaeology museums and its contemporary art galleries. Or how about forgetting the coast altogether and moving inland? Some of Provence’s most beautiful villages await the more intrepid travellers. Places like the hilltop town of Saint Paul de Vence, whose winding streets, bougainvillea-filled squares and ancient fountains have inspired artists and poets for centuries. Or Grasse, the perfume capital of the world, with its medieval lanes and endless boutiques and cafes. Book yourself onto a tour and see how the perfume industry has changed over the years.

But if its glitz and glamour you’re still in search of then don’t forget to include Monaco somewhere in your itinerary. Synonymous with style, this little principality to the east of Nice is a millionaire’s playground. Splash some of your cash in the casino and party the night away with the rich and famous. Or take the cheaper option and sit on the beach and soak up that Mediterranean sun – just don’t forget those designer shades; this is the Côte d’Azure after all!

Tips

. . .
1/3

While the beach in Nice is, ahem, nice, it’s also shingle, which isn’t to everyone’s taste. For sandy beaches head to the friendly resort of Juan le Pins, a mere 30 minutes train journey away.

2/3

See the Côte d’Azure from a different perspective and hop on one of the cruises that departs from Nice to St Tropez. It’s an easy and picturesque way to get to the fancy resort, which doesn’t have a train station or an airport.

3/3

Watch out for pickpockets. While you won’t find violent crime along the Côte d’Azure you will find some petty crime. Be careful in touristy areas, make sure your handbags are zipped shut and never put your wallet in your back pocket.
