La Rochelle is a lively city with a rich history. This was where the first Canadian settlers set out from and where much of the trade with New World took place. The result is a city packed with historic buildings, museums and great cultural goodies. You can also head out to the city’s nearby islands and discover some of their deserted beaches.

Things to see and do in La Rochelle

Vieux Port

Or the old port if you’re not into the local lingo. This is the most picturesque part of the city and is packed with centuries old buildings. Just wander around and soak up that other worldly atmosphere.

Hotel Le Ville

Hotel Le Ville

At the heart of the old town you’ll find the magnificent Hotel Le Ville. With its 15th century perimeter wall and beautiful courtyard, this is a Renaissance treat for tourists. Wander around its remarkably ornate interior and gawp at the architectural splendour of times gone by.

Musée des Automates

Musée des Automates

Take the family back in time at the Musée des Automates. You’ll find hundreds of automated dolls illustrating different periods in French history. An educational and fun day out for the whole family.

Aquarium

Aquarium

The city’s ultra-modern aquarium brings together both local and tropical underwater critters from the tiny to the enormous. Check out the views from its rooftop cafe too – stunning!

Islands

Islands

The islands off La Rochelle’s coast are perfect for a day trip or two. Ile de Ré is the closest, while Ile d'Aix has some gorgeous untouched beaches. Catch a boat from the harbour and enjoy an island adventure.

Towers

Towers

The city’s three defensive towers used to protect the city harbour in the 14th century are some of the most recognisable symbols of the city today. You can buy a combined ticket for a tour of all three towers, which will fill you in on their history and importance. Make sure you climb to the top of the St Nicolas’ Tower for some spectacular views of the city.

Tips

. . .
1/3

Looking to entertain the little ones? Then head to Parc Charruyer in the heart of the town. This vast park of 100 acres is full of landscaped gardens, streams and even a small zoological garden and game area for the kids.

2/3

See La Rochelle from another perspective by taking advantage of the free bike hire offered by the city. They’re down by Quai Valin and the first two hours are free.

3/3

Sample the city’s freshest seafood down in the almost Scandinavian looking Le Gabut area. Located close to the water, this is the perfect spot to soak up the beautiful ambience of La Rochelle.
