With its Caribbean-style beaches, stylish but understated resorts and beautiful mountain ranges, Corsica is a holiday destination packed with sophistication.
Forget the French Riviera, those who are looking for elegant holidays without the hype head to Corsica. This island to the north of Sardinia is famous for its tropical-style beaches, incredible mountain scenery and unique cultural mix. Originally belonging to the Genoese, you’ll find more than a hint of an Italian flair in not only the architecture and the towns, but in the food and the local language. If you didn’t know any better, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in Tuscany, not France.

...Corsica has some of Europe’s best beaches...

But identity crises aside, the island that brought us the likes of Napoleon also brings holidaymakers more than 1000 kilometres of coastline and over 200 beaches. Expect Caribbean-style swathes of glorious sand, crystal clear waters to die for and even the odd coconut lying here and there. When we say Corsica has some of Europe’s best beaches we’re not lying! For the best this island has to offer, head south and check out idyllic little resorts like Porto Pollo, Tizzano and Pianottolli where elegance and class come as standard, minus the pretence. If, on the other hand, it’s a bit of glitz and glam you’re secretly craving, look no further than Porto Vecchio, Corsica’s answer to St Tropez. With its trendy boutiques, fashionable cafes and a lively but sophisticated nightlife, this is the place to be if you want to mix with the rich and famous. Just go easy on the old credit card here, or you and your bank manager might not see eye to eye when you get home.

...Corsica is great hiking country...

No matter what type of holiday you’re after you’ll find it on this French island. In addition to a never-ending supply of watersports along the coast you’ll find Corsica is great hiking country with an interior full of soaring pine-covered mountains, olive groves and forests of cork. And with a past that covers Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Byzantines, Moors and Genoese, this island has more than most in the way of historical goodies to get your teeth into. The ancient cliff top town of Bonifacio dates from the 9th century and is a culture vulture’s dream with its myriad of winding medieval streets, an ancient Genoese citadel and some pretty fantastic views, thank you very much. And then there is the Italian looking town of Bastia with its picturesque harbour, Baroque churches and warren of backstreets and pastel-coloured houses. Come here if you want a holiday with a truly traditional Corsican experience.
