The beautiful city of Bordeaux offers up a whole host of holiday goodies; the world’s best wine, a romantic city centre, culture by the bucket-load and even family-friendly beach resorts just a short train journey away.

If you thought Paris was the only French city worthy of a romantic break, then think again. Bordeaux, that city famous for its wine is vying for the title of France’s most amorous town. The reason? Well, it could have something to do with its newly revamped Neo-classical centre, its moonlit riverside walks, or its beautifully landscaped parks. One thing’s for sure, it won’t be long before you’re falling in love with Bordeaux and all its charms.

But this city in France’s southwest is more than just a place for love’s young dream. Recent renovations have seen the place transformed into a city full of warehouse-converted bars and restaurants, and pedestrianised squares brimming with cafes and buzzing with life. And with a student population nearing 100,000, you can expect a nightlife that is both vibrant and diverse. Culture buffs will love the array of historical goodies on offer. Sights such as Grand Theatre, which is one of the oldest wooden frame opera houses in Europe, or the Romanesque masterpiece of the 14th century Bordeaux Cathedral. And that’s not mentioning the array of top quality museums and galleries on offer, like the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Natural History Museum to name a few. For tourists, this city really is overflowing with great things to do and places to see.

But it’s the activities outside the city that are the main attraction for many tourists visiting Bordeaux. Medieval towns such as Cadillac or the World Heritage listed St Emilion lie waiting to be explored. And, as the world’s second-largest wine producing region, you can expect plenty of opportunities to try and buy the odd bottle of plonk or three. Organised or independent trips around vineyards such as Château Margaux and Château Petrus provide excellent day trips from the city. And if the sun is getting that little bit too hot and the kids are starting to get restless? Head on down to the beach resort of Arcachon, a mere 40 minutes away by train. You’ll find stunning beaches, sand dunes and enough watersports to keep even the most active of people happy. Arcachon is perfect for anyone looking to escape the city for a few days, or for those beach bums who like nothing better than baking on the beach for a week or two.

Tips

. . .

For clothes and general shopping, head down to Rue Sainte Catherine, which is the longest pedestrian street in the whole of Europe.

See Bordeaux and its beautiful surroundings from the Garonne River. Boat cruises can be picked up from the city and last anything from one day up to a week.
