Nineteenth century elegance, a healthy respect for good food, and a nice helping of spa-like pampering come as standard in Biarritz, one of France’s chicest resorts.

If you want to holiday like royalty then you can’t get much better than Biarritz. Known for attracting the likes of Queen Victoria in the 19th century and Frank Sinatra a hundred years later, this city in the Basque region of France is rightly titled the ‘Monte Carlo of the Atlantic coast’. Back in the day this was the place to see and be seen. Nowadays the pretense is long gone and this lively resort pulls in crowds from all walks of life, all attracted to its kilometres of sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, wide ranging accommodation and sophisticated elegance. Families, teenage surfers, young couples and the silver set –  they’re all here enjoying what the city has to offer.

Central Market

...a gastronomic delight with its famous Basque cuisine...

And while the fabulous and the famous may have left for pastures new, Biarritz’s charms have remained firmly where they are. The belle époque architecture is still here, as is the place that started it all, the Hotel du Palais, built originally as a beachside residence for the Empress Eugéne back in the 19th century. What’s more, this city is a gastronomic delight with its famous Basque cuisine from the Pyrenees Mountains. And with huge array of bistros, brasseries and gorgeous Michelin-starred restaurants catering for all tastes and wallet sizes, you might just have to hit the gym when you get home!

Beaches

...bake on the beach...

For those of you who’d rather start some exercise before you leave by busting a few moves on the dance floor  then check out Biarritz’s nightlife. And as you’d expect from the ‘Monte Carlo of the Atlantic coast’ it’s pretty varied. An assortment of casinos, electro blasting beachfront cafes, fashionable nightclubs and more sedate wine bars will keep you busy well into the small hours. But if you’d rather lose some weight in a more traditional fashion, Biarritz has other options too. Well, this is rugby country after all, and while the locals like nothing more than to bake on the beach, they also like to keep themselves active. Not only is this place a surfer’s paradise, drawing over 100,000 spectators to its annual surfing festival – Hawaii eat your heart out – it also boasts 10 golf courses, the ski resorts of the Pyrenees and numerous world-class spa hotels, which are the very essence of luxury. Could you ask for anything more? Didn’t think so. Oh, and did we mention that this place is also a shopaholic’s dream. Head down to the exclusive Avenue Edouard VII to see what we mean, but maybe leave the credit card in the hotel, just in case.

Tips

. . .
1/3

Head across the Spanish border to San Sebastian and see a different side of the Basque Country. This picturesque city is renowned for its cuisine and has more Michelin-starred restaurants per head than any other city.

2/3

For some peace and quiet, head to Plage Miramar the most northerly of Biarritz’s beaches. In addition to some pretty fantastic sand, you’ll find the beach flanked by beautiful gardens and a promenade full of cafes and restaurants.

3/3

Check out the place that started it all. The Hotel du Palais was originally built as a summer retreat for the Empress Eugéne. Today it is a period-style five star hotel with the best beachfront location in Biarritz. Pop in for a coffee if nothing else!
