Staggering natural beauty, and a capital city that looks like it came straight from a Disney fairytale describe what holidays in Estonia are all about.

Since removing the chains of Soviet domination in the early 1990s, Estonia has come a long way for such a small country. Today it pulls in the tourist crowds looking for a city break with a difference with its beautiful capital Tallinn, in all its medieval glory. But Middle Age splendour aside, you’ll find much more on offer in this diverse little Baltic country than you think. Where else can you come across countryside covered in primeval forests, more lakes than you can shake a fish at and more than 7000 rivers and streams? Think Finland in miniature at prices that will make your bank manager smile and you’re on the right lines.

Tartu

A capital city that looks like it came straight from a Disney fairytale...

But the real reason you’re thinking about Estonia is because of its fairytale capital Tallinn, right? And who can blame you? This World Heritage Site city not only boasts an array of tantalizing fairytale towers, castles, churches, and winding cobblestone streets, but a nightlife that has all of Europe talking. With its trendy lounges, pumping nightclubs and backstreet pubs all neatly camouflaged within the medieval buildings of the Old Town, you’ll soon understand why Tallinn has become a firm favourite with Europe’s youngsters.

Skiing

Choose between cross-country skiing, hiking in the forests or the beach.

But if you do come to Estonia, you have to experience what this country does best – the great outdoors. Choose between cross-country skiing in charming resorts like Otepää, hiking in the forests of the Lahemaa National Park or the beach at Estonia’s summer capital Pärnu where you’ll find a beach life in the summer that gives Mediterranean resorts a run for their money. Now there’s something you didn’t expect. Of course you could always head off on a tour of Estonia’s 1,500 or so islands, or check out the country’s rich history that includes 200 manor houses dating from as far back as the 13th century, and don’t forget the historic university city of Tartu and Tallinn in all its medieval glory. Pick Estonia as your next holiday destination and you’ll be shocked by just how much this small country has to offer.

Tips

. . .
1/3

If you’re visiting the capital then purchase a Tallinn Card. You’ll find them for sale around the Old Town and they entitle you to free public transport and free entrance to many of the city’s top attractions.

2/3

See the ‘Venice of Estonia’ and take a trip to the resort town of Haapsalu on the country’s west coast. Famous for its curative mud baths and charming wood houses, this is Estonia at its most picturesque.

3/3

Head to Estonia’s largest island Saaremaa for some of the country’s most unique natural habitats and some spectacular hiking opportunities.
