Brussels – famous for being the centre of the European Union, producer of some of the world’s best chocolate and home to more beer varieties than any other city in the world. That aside, Brussels is a city with rich historical offerings, world-class museums, a chic café culture, and stunning Art Nouveau architecture, and should definitely be at the top of anyone’s list when it comes to choosing that city break you’ve been after. As any Brussels travel guide will tell you, this is a modern, cosmopolitan city at the heart of Europe. And although it is known more for being a political hub, it also has a surprisingly young vibe that makes it one of the more cutting edge cities in Europe. Whatever you’re after from a city break, trust us when we say you’ll find it in Brussels.

Atomium

...a city with rich historical offerings, world-class museums, a chic café culture, and stunning architecture.

One of the main draws of this city is its size. It might be the heart of the European Union, but it has a city centre that is easily walkable, set within its 14th century city walls – great news for you, bad news for your chiropodist. And it’s here that you’ll find many Brussels’ tourism gems on offer, such as the Grand Place surrounded by elaborate 18th  century guild houses, and the Royal Quarter containing the Palace and Belgian Parliament. But if you prefer, you could always just bypass all that culture and head straight for the pub, of which there are many. Well, this is the capital of a country that produces more than 800 different varieties of beer after all. And did you know there are more Michelin-star restaurants here per head than in Paris? Let’s just say this is a city famous for its food. Of course, any trip to Brussels wouldn’t be complete without sampling the city’s speciality of ‘moules frites,’ or mussels and chips to you and me.

Ancienne Belgique

...it also has a surprisingly young vibe that makes it one of the more cutting edge cities in Europe.

After all that fine dining what better way to finish off the day with a little live music, for which Brussels is now world famous. You’ll find everything here, from rock and blues in the city’s little bars and cafes, to opera and classical at the Palais des Beaux Arts. And for the families out there why not take the little ones on a magical tram ride through the Sonian Forest to the quaint little village of Tervuren. Alternatively you could take advantage of the Cyclocity scheme, hire your own bicycle, and be your own master – now enough talk about Brussels’ tourism, get out there and explore for yourself!

Tips

. . .
1/3

When it comes to Belgium tourism, Bruges takes centre stage. Visit is during the evening in summer, when the sightseers have subsided. Alternatively, visit in winter, when the town is far quieter and you can get a true sense of its timelessness.

2/3

If you decide to pay a visit to Ghent, come on the Saturday before July 21 and catch the Gentse Feesten: an elaborate and city-wide explosion of music and theatre that lasts for ten days.

3/3

For the best view of Brussels head to the top of the triumphal arch of Jubelpark. To get there, take the lift inside the Army and Military History Museum to the top, but be sure to get there early to avoid the crowds! And no pushing!
