Arguably one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Vienna is a must for anyone who appreciates stunning architecture and fabulous settings.
Not many cities can claim to have been the centre of successively powerful empires for more than five hundred years. Not many can argue to be the capital of classical music, and not many can boast to being the founder of European café culture. Austria’s capital Vienna, however, can. And the legacy that is left is one of magnificent Baroque palaces, a smorgasbord of musical delights and more cafes than you can shake a stick at.

...the legacy that is left is one of magnificent Baroque palaces

Tourists come to Vienna to experience its famed beauty, its idyllic setting on the River Danube and its vast green spaces that make up over half of the city. We’re not lying when we say Vienna is one of the most architecturally stunning cities in the world. And everywhere you look you’ll see remnants of an imperial past, from imposing Baroque squares to Art Nouveau edifices and, of course, those famous palaces. Home to the Habsburg Dynasty for hundreds of years Vienna has built up quite a collection and any visit here wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the huge Hofburg Palace, which was the main royal residence. If you have the time then try to slip in a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace as well, which was the Habsburgs’ summer home – now this is what we call luxury living!

...Yes, that’s right, Vienna’s centre is a car-free zone.

If you think its palaces are lavish wait until you see its cafes. To say Vienna was built for cafe culture is no understatement. These cafes are big business and give a new meaning to the phrase ‘High Tea’. Just watch your waistline though; like everything in Vienna, the cakes and pastries here are over the top! The best place to sample these culinary delights is along the Ringstrasse, a wide ring road that encircles the pedestriansed city centre. Yes, that’s right, Vienna’s centre is a car-free zone. What’s more, it’s here that you’ll find most of the city’s tourist attractions, which include its famous cathedral, the Imperial Treasury and the world famous opera house. If you choose to come to Vienna then a trip to the latter is a must – this is the city that gave us Mozart, Schubert, Strauss and Brahms after all.
And although Vienna’s exterior might be centuries old, its soul is very much alive and kicking. Nights out consist of trendy bars and pumping electro and this being Vienna even the clubs come with a touch of style. Head down to Gürtel for a spot of clubbing à la Art Nouveau and see where the cool kids hang out.
