Salzburg weather

Enjoying warm summers, temperate autumns and springs, and cold, snowy winters, Salzburg’s weather seems to have it just right. If you’re heading out here for winter sports, you’ll want to aim for the period between December and March for the best snow. Alternatively, head out in the summer months when the weather in Salzburg is at its warmest. With average temperatures peaking at around 25 degrees, this is the best time to go to capitalise on the city’s sights and open spaces. This is, of course, the busiest tourist season too, so come in early spring or late autumn to get the best compromise between crowds and the weather.

Salzburg festivals and events

January:  International Hot Air Balloon Week is just a stone’s throw from Salzburg in the village of Filzmoos, the world capital of ballooning. See the skies full of balloons and maybe take a trip yourself!

June:  All through June, the Goldegger Blues and Folk Music Festival is held at the medieval Goldegg Castle, within the castle courtyard. A well-loved summer custom.

July:  The Salzburg Summer Music Festival is close to one hundred years old and sees a host of classical music concerts take place around the city. Expect to hear a lot of Mozart – well this is his hometown after all.

October:  The biggest folklore event in all of Austria, the Hallein International Folk Festival sees crowds fill the nearby village of Hallein in an explosive celebration of European folk music.

Tips

. . .
1/3

If you want to get into a festive spirit then make sure you head to Salzburg for its Christmas markets in the Domplatz. Now this is what we call a fairytale setting.

2/3

The best thing about Salzburg is its skyline. For the best panoramic views head to the terrace at Café Winkler above the city. And while there try the apple strudel – delicious!

3/3

For the best shopping, head to the lanes within the Altstadt (old town) which are packed with little boutiques and designer stores. The Getreidegasse is the city’s main shopping street lined with many beautiful Baroque buildings.
