Beautiful settings, a thriving cultural scene and ski resorts just around the corner, Salzburg is the perfect recipe for a great getaway.
The hills are definitely alive with the sound of music around the Austrian city of Salzburg, and a good many other things too. Mozart’s home city and the setting for that wartime musical staring Julie Andrews is a tourist’s paradise with one of the most beautifully preserved old towns in Central Europe – just ask UNESCO. This is as picture postcard-perfect a city as you’ll find, where domes and spires crowd the skyline and cafes are packed with throngs of people enjoying the mountain air.

...one of the most beautifully preserved old towns in Central Europe – just ask UNESCO.

Named the ‘Rome of the North’, Salzburg is the world capital of Baroque and is as famous for its stunning setting and jaw-dropping architecture as for anything else. Fairytale fortresses, cobblestone lanes, courtyards, fountains and exquisite palaces sit proudly amongst a backdrop of snowcapped Alpine mountains. Walking around this city it’s not hard to see where Mozart got his inspiration. And what’s more, the old town is pedestrianised with most of the main sights within easy reach of one another. Sights that, of course, include plenty of Mozart magic. There is the Mozart Museum and Mozart House if you are interested in the history of Salzburg’s most famous son. But if your musical tastes are a little more on the modern side then you can always hop on one of the many ‘Sound of Music Tours’, which will take you around the main locations of the 1960’s movie. And, for a full dose of culture, come during the summer months and experience the Salzburg Festival. This five-week arts extravaganza sees the city turn into one big stage with opera, drama and musical concerts galore and is an event not to be missed. If it’s culture you’re after, it doesn’t get much better than this.

...Stunning is one word you could use to describe it. Think lush green mountain vistas complete with shimmering lakes and villages.

If you decide to come to Salzburg then don’t miss out on the chance to explore the surrounding area called Salzkammergut – a bit of a mouthful, we know. Stunning is one word you could use to describe it. Think lush green mountain vistas complete with shimmering lakes and villages that look like they came fresh from the children’s story ‘Heidi’. Not only is this area a protected World Heritage Site, but it is also the perfect place to go hiking, take part in a bit of cycling or, in the summer months, go for a quick dip. Oh, and did we mention the ski resorts around here? Well let’s just say you have more than 20 to choose from, with the world-famous Kitzbühel a mere 80 kilometres away. Now where did you leave that snowboard?
