Things to see and do in Salzburg
Schloss Hellbrunn
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Salzburg, Schloss Hellbrunn is an Italianate villa built as a pleasure palace by the Archbishops of Salzburg in the 17th century. It’s best loved for its eccentric Wasserspiele, a water garden with a difference, in that its hidden and trick fountains are set to surprise and soak its visitors! A great place to spend a day with the family.
Dom
Salzburg Cathedral, or Dom, is a 15th century architectural marvel and a must-see among Salzburg’s sights. Despite suffering bomb damage during the Second World War, the Cathedral has been painstakingly restored and, if you venture inside, you’ll find the font where Mozart himself was baptised!
Festung Hohensalzburg
This enormous fortress is a real high point of Salzburg’s sightseeing, quite literally in fact! Its ramparts tower above the city and offer incredible views of the towers and spires of the city, not to mention the surrounding Alpine landscape. It’s over 900 years old and is a great place to spend a day exploring and taking photos.
Mozarts Geburtshaus
No trip to Salzburg would be complete without visiting the birthplace of the man himself, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was born and raised in the city. It’s a townhouse right in the centre, where the family lived for around 30 years. Inside you can see all sorts of memorabilia, letters, and the original rooms the family lived in.
River cruises
A great way to see the sights at your leisure is by taking a cruise on the River Salzach. You can pick up a boat from Makart Bridge, and be shown the city’s wonders from the comfort of your seat.
Haus der Natur
Salzburg’s Museum of Natural History is a wonderfully hands-on affair, with all sorts of children’s activities. There’s a reptile enclosure and even an aquarium where you can watch the sharks being fed.
